Officials in Nigeria’s Kwara State have attributed a deadly assault earlier this week to extremist motives rather than routine criminal activity, accusing the Islamist militant group Boko Haram of carrying it out.
According to the state governor, the violence targeted the Kaiama community after locals resisted an imposed religious doctrine. At least 75 people are confirmed dead, he said, warning that the casualty count may still rise as more information emerges.
