Liverpool have dismissed head coach Arne Slot after just two seasons in charge, ending the Dutchman’s reign less than a year after he guided the club to a historic Premier League title.
The 47-year-old, who succeeded Jurgen Klopp in 2024, led the Reds to their 20th English league crown in his first season at Anfield. However, a dramatic decline in form during the 2025/26 campaign ultimately convinced the club’s hierarchy that a managerial change was necessary.
Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League, recording only 60 points and trailing champions Arsenal by 25 points. Although the Merseyside club secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League, senior officials believed the team’s performances fell short of expectations.
In an official statement, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) praised Slot’s achievements and professionalism but stressed that the club needed a fresh direction to restore its competitiveness at the highest level.
“The decision reflects our belief that a different approach is required for the next phase of the team’s development,” the club stated.
Former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola is reportedly the frontrunner to take over. The Spaniard has earned widespread praise for his high-intensity attacking football and is understood to be in discussions with Liverpool over the vacant position.
Slot’s departure comes despite significant backing in the transfer market. Liverpool spent heavily to strengthen the squad, including a British-record £125 million deal for striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United and a club-record £116 million move for German international Florian Wirtz.
The season was further marked by heartbreak following the tragic death of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota in a car accident. The club commended Slot’s leadership and compassion during a period that deeply affected players, staff and supporters alike.
Liverpool acknowledged that Slot’s greatest achievement remains his title-winning debut season, which saw him become one of the few managers in Premier League history to lift the trophy in his first year in charge.
