The Federal Government has commenced decisive steps to recover and operationalise the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) office building in Abeokuta, Ogun State, following concerns raised over the condition of the facility.
The Honourable Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Kunle Salako, made this known during an unscheduled inspection of the project site on Thursday, 12th February 2026. The visit was prompted by public reactions to a video circulating on social media which drew attention to the state of the building.
During the assessment, the Minister described the delay in completing and handing over the project as unacceptable, noting that the facility was intended to strengthen health insurance operations and improve service access for residents of Ogun State.
Findings at the site revealed that the contractor had yet to formally hand over the building to NHIA management, despite the advanced stage of construction.
Consequently, Dr. Salako directed the contractor to complete all outstanding works and rectify identified issues within one month, effective 12th February 2026.
He stressed that the Federal Government would not tolerate avoidable delays in projects critical to healthcare delivery, particularly at a time when efforts are being intensified to expand health insurance coverage and ensure more Nigerians benefit from affordable healthcare services.
The Minister further assured that the Ministry would closely supervise the remediation process to guarantee that the facility becomes fully operational within the stipulated timeframe.
According to a press release issued by Ado Bako, Assistant Director, Information and Public Relations, on Thursday, the Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public investments and ensuring that health infrastructure across the country is efficiently utilised for the benefit of all citizens.
