The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has described the late Akran of Badagry, Oba Babatunde Akran, as a transformational traditional ruler whose legacy will continue to resonate across generations.
Dabiri-Erewa made this known during a condolence visit to the monarch’s palace in Badagry, where she was received by the Regent, chiefs, and members of the royal family. She noted that the late Oba’s reign was defined by stability, cultural pride, and sustained efforts toward community development.
She particularly praised the institutionalisation of the Badagry Door of Return Festival, describing it as a landmark initiative that has elevated Badagry’s global relevance by reconnecting Africans in the diaspora with their ancestral heritage.
The NiDCOM boss emphasised that the monarch’s passion for cultural preservation and diaspora engagement has left an enduring imprint, positioning Badagry as a key historical and cultural destination.
Family members and chiefs of the late monarch expressed gratitude for the visit, noting that such gestures reflect the strong bond between national institutions and traditional authorities. They also reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining the late Oba’s vision for unity and development.
During the visit, Dabiri-Erewa inspected the ongoing construction of the Door of Return site and commended the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for supporting the project. She described it as a strategic tourism and cultural initiative aimed at strengthening ties between Africa and its diaspora.
The project is expected to further reinforce Badagry’s historical significance while promoting cultural tourism and international engagement.
