Hospital Insists Emergency Care Was Provided, Rejects Claims of Negligence
The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja has responded to growing public concern following the death of Ms. Ifunanya Lucy Nwangene, who reportedly died on January 31, 2026, after complications arising from a snake bite.
According to the Head of Clinical Services at FMC Abuja, Dr. Bioku Muftau, the patient was received at the facility and attended to immediately by the emergency medical team upon arrival.
Dr. Muftau explained that standard emergency protocols for snake envenomation were promptly initiated, including resuscitative measures, intravenous fluid administration, oxygen support, and the use of appropriate polyvalent anti-snake venom.
He stated that medical evaluation showed the patient had already developed severe neurotoxic complications before presentation. Owing to the critical condition, arrangements were made to transfer her to the Intensive Care Unit for advanced supportive care.
However, according to him, the patient suffered a sudden and rapid deterioration shortly before the transfer could be completed. Despite prolonged cardiopulmonary resuscitation and sustained life-saving efforts by the attending medical team, she was pronounced dead.
Dr. Muftau also addressed allegations circulating on social media suggesting that the hospital lacked anti-snake venom or failed to act promptly. He described such claims as false and misleading, stressing that the necessary antivenom was available and administered as required.
“The narrative being shared publicly does not reflect the clinical realities of this case,” he said, adding that the hospital maintains emergency preparedness and adheres strictly to established medical standards.
While expressing condolences to the family of the deceased, FMC Abuja urged the public to exercise caution and rely on verified information from credible sources, particularly in cases involving loss of life.
The hospital reiterated its commitment to transparency, ethical practice, and continuous improvement in patient care, stating that it remains open to appropriate inquiries regarding the incident.
